Fukuzawa Yukichi was born into an impoverished low-ranking samurai family of the Okudaira Clan of Nakatsu in 1835. His family was poor following the early death of his father. At the age of 14, Fukuzawa entered a school of Dutch studies (rangaku). In 1853, shortly after Commodore Matthew C. Perry's arrival in Japan, Fukuzawa's brother (the family patriarch) asked Fukuzawa to travel to Nagasaki, where the Dutch colony at Dejima was located. Fukuzawa was instructed to learn the Dutch language in order to study European cannon designs and gunnery techniques. 写真は豊前中津藩城下現在の中津市の福沢諭吉の旧宅(国の指定史跡）　です。 旧宅はお城から遠くない下級武士の住宅街にある粗末なものです。中津藩の大坂屋敷で生まれた諭吉は父の死亡で中津に帰り少年期を中津ですごしました。でも下級武士の諭吉は住みこごちは良くなっかたようです。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　「門閥制度は親の敵でござる」と言ったほどです。この旧宅の側の土蔵の二階の６畳ぐらいの屋根裏部屋で諭吉は勉強したようです。そこで学び、成長して長崎で、又大坂で蘭学を学びそして江戸にでてついには幕府使節に随行して、咸臨丸に乗ってアメリカに行き、啓蒙家の道を歩みます。壮年期になると少年期の嫌な思い出の中津を許したのか中津のために色々と行っています。「天は人の上に人をつくらず、人の下に人をつくらず」の名文句は故郷の中津の為に、市学校を作った時の「学問のすすめ」の冒頭に書かれたものです。この家と土蔵の屋根裏部屋をみて勉学の厳しさと夢を感じます。 ○大分県ｈｐ「見ちょくれアルバム」より	諭吉の旧宅：Old Yukiti　yashiki	photograph is an old house of Yukichi Fukuzawa in Nakatsu City in the Nakatsu clan castle town present provinces (specified historic site in < BR > country) in front of Yutaka.
